In teaching math to special education students, one important tip to remember is to not inundate them with homework. They believe that they do not "get" mathematical knowledge from their teacher so much as from their own explorations, thinking, and participation in discussions. Sam Koski from Miami Springs Senior High sent me an image of an earlier use in the 1960 edition of Algebra, Its Big Ideas and Basic Skills(McGraw-Hill) which I have added here. As students laid out the number of hot cubes and cold cubes represented, they could easily see if the answer would be a positive or negative number by which color had the most cubes.

Asking students to identify a pattern and then conjecture a corresponding divisibility property of the integers provides a wonderful discovery exercise.
